To latch on to every bit of good

With our children and with some relatives, we often experience how powerless our words can be. Taken by their own interests, and often by consumerism, they reject any discussions about spiritual matters. We can’t pass on values to them, even when these are values which have helped us since the beginning of our marriage. We see them on the defensive and dissatisfied, yet we don’t know how to help them. (Angel T.C.)

We have also experienced such powerlessness before evil in the world, which seems to suffocate all the good things that we have sown with generosity, especially in the hearts of those whom we love. But we know that this is not the case; we have to keep on hoping and learn how to start anew, discovering and latching on to every bit of good, oftentimes hidden in seemingly indifferent and hardened hearts.

There are moments in life when we don’t have to use words. Even Jesus on the cross had almost no words. He who was the “well-spring of words”—the Word himself—was reduced to silence. However, never was there another moment than that one on the cross where he had spoken more, with such a testimony of his infinite love. More than speeches, even if they are quite very convincing, it is being witnesses that leave a mark.

We must bear witness to the beauty and joy of a life which is generous and knows how to start again courageously, every day and without regrets. This will be our “homily,” which can leave an indelible sign, a much better legacy to our loved ones. The joyful love of spouses—faithful, beautiful, notwithstanding the inevitable weaknesses and difficulties of life—can be a powerful means of apostolate, making the family fashionable again. It will help the world around us hope again, since, in spite of what we see on the surface, deep down, people are yearning for authentic models.

Certainly, it is also important to express or explain one’s ideas, but at the right moment, and with great detachment, without wanting to convince or win over anyone. We must keep in mind that our words will be received more easily, if they are backed up by the witness of a normal, calm, and happy life, which knows how to enjoy life’s simple things, is attractive for one’s kindness and one’s care for oneself too, and of one’s physical appearance, from people who take time to relax, are not always in a hurry, and at the same time who are ever ready to serve those who are weaker, giving up time for those who need a listening ear, and knowing how to bring a smile to the world around them.
